Wookie - 'Wookie – 'Battle' (S2S Recordings)'
(Tuesday July 25, 2000 6:29 PM )

Released on 24/07/2000
Label:

There's no mistaking Wookie for the true Underground original he is and this is, in many ways, his most accomplished release to date. Lacking the crossover appeal that saw 'Scrappy'/'Down On You' played in a confusing array of sets or indeed the so-called 'breakbeat garage' credentials with which Wookie has been associated, 'Battle' opts for a more soulful direction.

The metronomic pulse of vocalist Lain's intro gives way to a traditional New York-style verse and harmony-driven chorus which is even replete with the traditional 'we can make it we try' sentiment. Far too brief in its radio edit format, the extended mix allows the song to stretch its wings and unfold into a 'proper' bit of soulful Garage. MJ Cole's nicely ruffed up mix ain't half bad either...
