The Robbie ego bus trundles on and on. How many more hip thrusts, knowing winks, cheeky grins and piercing lusty stares does this man have in him? And all the while, he's not half as annoying as Marti Pellow's cheesy grin was becoming towards the end of Wet Wet Wet. Perhaps we can forgive him his almighty arrogance because it's delivered with a self-deprecating sense of humour. Perhaps it's beause, every now and then, he delivers a hefty dollop of perfect pop.
Didn't like this when I first heard it on Robbie's current album 'Sing When You're Winning'. Just a lazy rehash of Gloria Gaynor's glorious disco anthem 'I Will Survive', surely. But gradually, the continous airplay and MTV rotation has taken its toll and it's now just bearable. In no small way thanks to the Formula One themed video, where he plays pipe-smoking driver Bob Williams - Graham Hill anyone?
The lyrics seem to be about loneliness and failed relationships in the big city and the whole thing breezes by pleasantly enough. It's OK, it's alright. It's not prime Robbie though...
