Taken from Nathan Haines' soon to be released debut Sound Travels solo album, 'Surprising' sees saxophonist Haines team up with the prolific Phil Asher (aka restless soul) to produce four chunk of four to the floor and broken house beats.
The main mix here strays into soulful, 2step territory, while the beats mix provides more sparse arrangements to give the bass more prominence.
On the flip we get into more serious jazz territory, as keysboard runs and bass lines collide extravagantly over a swinging third beat skip in the drum arrangement. Totally soul-jazz-dance, this is where the more inventive DJs will find their home.
The final track, which is probably the original, but as it's a white label it's hard to tell, suppresses the top end to give that urban, Lo Fi, bass edged soul sound that exploded in London in the early Nineties.
A soulful package that doesn't surprise so much as point a way.
