Nelly - 'Nelly – ‘Ride Wit Me’ (Universal Records)'
(Tuesday May 8, 2001 3:37 PM
)
Released on 07/05/2001
Label:
The most straightforwardly 'pop' of all the St. Louis hip-popper's releases to date; 'Ride Wit Me' privileges pop melodies over the groove that was becoming familiar from previous Nelly releases. Taking the kind of acoustic guitar loop and plucked strings that wouldn't be out of place on the average Emma Bunton release, Nelly recounts an age old tale of how having a lot of money makes you feel better than having none at all. Is it pop? If it was any more pop it'd be the Spice Girls back together with Geri having ditched that dubious R&B direction, on TOTP shouting about 'girl power' and salvaging their desperate careers in a blaze of pop glory.
