Havin' a crack at songs like this is tantamount to artistic suicide whether it's for charity or not. Look, right, 'What's Going On' is one of the greatest songs ever written - okay? Now you'd better not even think about re-recording it with fu**kng Fred Durst!!
Look at the list that have tried and failed: Quincy Jones, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Weldon Irvine (really awful this one). True, Donny Hathaway recorded a rather bloody good version on his '72 live album but he's pretty much on his own.
Bono, needless to say, is involved and brings with him the like of Nelly Furtado, Destiny's Child, Michael Stipe, Ja Rule (really awful this one), Nelly (surprisingly effective) and, ahem, Fred Durst.
Oh, Fred Durst. Can a career recover from a moment like this?
Possibly. But can a career recover from this combined with the jaw-dropping humiliation of 'that' video clip of the young Durst giving Vanilla Ice a run for his money. Doubtful, really doubtful. Wes Borland, you got out not a moment too soon.
