Compost regulars may know this Freiburg based duo in their former incarnation as the Supersempft. For some reason bassist Tim Maragnoli and drummer Thomas Braun have decided to re-invent themselves as Intuit and embark on 'A New Beginning'.
To get into the groove of their new guise you need to jump straight to the b-side where you'll find 'Wewa', a stomping Fela Kuti inspired collision of soaring saxophone, mumbled refrains and vocal chants.
A mesmeric loop of beats, as befits its Afrobeat pretensions, this is solid back room stuff that packs enough energy to keep the crowd away from the bar, while refusing to compromise on musicality and intellect.
The self consciously titled 'Supersempft Baby' is a soulful jazz-hop excursion that pays lip service to the Naughties, as opposed to the early Nineties, via vocoda lyrics. Even so it sounds closer to Seventies experimentalism despite the drum breaks.
'A New Beginning', the main track here has intellectual content but is emotionally shallow, despite nice watery production touches, and 'O Preguicoso' is again a competent piece of Latin jazz that has superb moments and gives full reign to Braun's imaginative beats.
Perhaps not a new beginning, but it certainly bodes well for interesting future.
