New Order - ''60 Miles An Hour''
(Wednesday November 14, 2001 12:19 PM )

Released on 19/11/2001
Label: London

It is perhaps fitting that the reborn but nonetheless elder statesmen of New Order 2001 should release a track about the utter heroics of driving at an insanely swift 60 mph.

Back in the day, David Bowie recorded 'Always Crashing In The Same Car', from the tremendous album 'Low', in which he was "touching close to 94". Despite Sir Dave's obvious superiority in the bravery stakes, as he ripped like lightning through the Berlin streets, while Barney, Stephen and Hooky tootle around Salford watching-out for old ladies, New Order continue to amaze.

'60 Miles An Hour' is of course magnificent and travels at the exact opposite of the torpid velocity suggested by the title, as a wounded, corkscrew bass line ricochets against walls of steel guitars and celestial electro rushes.

As Ian Curtis once observed: "Where will it end?" The glory, in this case.
